7.3 Powerstroke Billet Compressor Wheel Upgrade (TP38/GTP38)

7.3 Powerstroke Billet Compressor Wheel Upgrade (TP38/GTP38)

Feb 9th 2026

If your 7.3 Powerstroke has ever done the turkey gobble / flutter thing under load, you’ve met compressor surge. In laymans terms, surge is teh turbo becoming innefficient/pushed too far for its design. Not only is it annoying and potentially dangerous due to the inconsistent lack of power it creates, surge contributes to premature turbo failure due to the constant changing loads on the shaft.

Why this billet wheel exists

Our Riffraff Diesel Billet Compressor Wheel (RDP170293) is a 2nd-generation upgrade for the stock TP38/GTP38 (including van turbo) from 1994–2003.

Compared to the older “anti-surge” style 5/5 blade wheels, this one uses a 4/4 blade design and modern profile work to do more than just calm the flutter—it’s designed to move more air with less drama.

What changes on the truck (real-world benefits)

Here’s what owners typically care about—spool, airflow, and drivability:

  • Lighter mass = quicker spool and better response
  • More CFM / boost potential (we typically see +5–7 PSI)
  • Less smoke + better drivability (because air shows up sooner)
  • On stock injectors, our testing averaged +17.4 hp and +38.7 lb-ft from the wheel swap alone

Quick nerd note: “Billet” by itself isn’t magic—design is what moves air. The advantage is that stronger billet material can support more aggressive blade/hub geometry that wouldn’t be as reliable if cast.

Install: driveway-friendly (with two rules)

This upgrade is straightforward if the turbo is on the bench, and we’ll say it loud for the folks in the back

  1. Don’t use an impact on installation.
  2. Don’t over-tighten the wheel. Torque the compressor wheel to 50–65 in-lb.

Other smart “while you’re in there” moves:

  • Use a new compressor housing O-ring (GZ-14-010) and torque the compressor housing bolts evenly in a star pattern to 12 ft-lb.
  • If the turbo is coming off anyway, fresh Turbo/Pedestal Viton O-rings (GZ-9-003) are cheap insurance against leaks.
  • We recommend balancing the rotating assembly if available (the wheel is already dual-plane balanced).

Bottom line

If you want a 7.3 billet compressor wheel upgrade that tackles turbo surge, improves response, and can add meaningful boost without changing the whole turbo, the RDP170293 Compressor Wheel is the cleanest “stock turbo, but better” move we offer.
