John Wood 4R100 Valve Body 7.3L Powerstroke 1996-2003
We offer modified accumulator valve bodies from John Wood Automotive because it is our experience that they are one of the best offered in the industry. John Wood has been building transmissions and valve bodies since 1983 and has a reputation for strong attention to detail, quality before quantity and excellent customer service.
A JW Valve Body will help to firm up shifting, while keeping the shifts crisp and not banging into gear. Also performs shorter shift duration, which decreases heat generated and reduces slippage and wear on the friction plates. While the valve body can be used with stock programming, we suggest a PHP Hydra if you are thinking of upgrading.
Please note that there is a 4 week window for core returns from when you receive the shipment. If the core isn't received back 30 days from customer receipt then your core charge will be forfeited.
Core Shipping Options:
- Pre-Ship Core - This allows you to ship your used cores in first without have to pay a core charge. Your order will ship once your cores are received.
- Return After Install - This is the quickest option to get your valve body. You pay the core fee up front and then it is refunded once the core is returned.
INSTALLATION NOTES: Installation of this valve body will require the use of an IN/LB torque wrench. If you don't have access to the correct tool, we recommend having a qualified mechanic perform the installation. Additionally, if your transmission has a lot of miles or years since the last rebuild, the Accumulator Body MAY stick to the Gasket, causing it to tear during disassembly. Caution must be taken to try to prevent this, but it is not always possible. If the gasket tears, the entire VB assembly must be dropped to replace it, and it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that the separator plate be dropped and the gasket between the separator plate and the transmission case also be replaced in this instance (which involves releasing the check balls). If you feel that this type of situation would be beyond your capability, we recommend having a qualified mechanic perform the installation.

Valve body
Was skeptical purchasing this due to a few bad reviews. Took a chance after Riff Raff put their install video out. Install is quite simple, just messy. Comes with thorough instructions as well. 2-3 shift used to stutter and hesitate under hard load, now trucks shifts seamless. Truck is a 2000 CCLB SRW with 224k on it. Glad I made the purchase.

Woods Valve body
I’ll start by saying the 4R100 shifts horrible in stock form. Even worse with a tuner. This valve body takes the hunting and delayed shifts away. Also eliminating the slam into gear under hard acceleration! The shifts are crisp but soft compared to other transmissions I have drove with shift kits and valve body’s.
I would say this VB brings the 4R100 to what it should have been from the factory! The swap was super simple! If you can change engine oil you can do the swap! Be sure to use a torque wrench for everything as the instructions say and in about a hour you’re done. I gave it 4 starts because it’s a bit on the pricey side but a must have mod even for 100% stock trucks. -
Top Quality
Made a huge difference in how my truck shifts. Nice and firm with no hang ups. I would recommend doing it. Super easy install.

JW VB
Clay and the RR team are top notch, John Woods not so much the last few years. This is the second sub par JW product.
Installed and had no second gear. Removed after about 50 miles to find the second gear accumulator piston stuck. I disassembled to inspect and found the core had been impacted and slightly oblonged the 2nd gear accumulator bore. Once apart i saw the JW VB mods are the;
Sonnax 36948-18k accumulator spring kit $37
Sonnax 4r100-LB1 line booster kit $38
So for $80 in Sonnax parts and a defective core I have a hard time justifying the price. Yes they do crisp up the shifts just like Sonnax advertisements. -
Much better than OEM
This is how the 4R100 is supposed to drive. Best update to the truck yet. Smooth, quicker upshifts and downshifts.
Install was pretty straight forward. It what you think it is... messy but not bad. -
One of the best upgrades!
Hands down one of the best upgrades I’ve done to my truck. I wasn’t real impressed with it when I first installed it but after changing my tunes on my Hydra to the “modified valve body” tunes it made a big difference. Feels like much more of the engine’s power is making it to the wheels now. This should be one of the very first upgrades for any 7.3 owner. Shipping was fast and installation was simple. Just make sure you don’t tear the black valve body gasket or you will be taking a lot more apart than you wanted. Highly recommend for anyone with a 4R100! Way less slippage and much firmer shifts.

Accumulator Body
Messy but easy install over all. Shifting is much improved, feels like a new transmission.

Valve Body
Instructions were very confusing regarding application. This cost me money.

Great upgrade for OEM trans
Good improvement to any stock transmission. If you're doing upgrades do yourself a favor and don't ignore the transmission.
