Donaldson Blue vs. Motorcraft: Ford 7.3 Powerstroke Oil Filters

We sell both the Donaldson Blue DBL7405 and the OEM Motorcraft FL-1995-A for the 1994–2003 7.3 Powerstroke. Neither is a filter we’d hesitate to run. They’re just built with different priorities.
Ford originally specified the FL-1995 for the 7.3 and even noted that it filtered significantly smaller particles than many generic “will-fit” filters available at the time. Today’s service replacement is the FL-1995-A / F4TZ-6731-B.

OEM Motorcraft FL-1995-A
If you want the filter Ford engineered and specifies for the engine, this is it. Absolutely nothing wrong with it, it’s a quality filter.
The FL-1995-A uses a cellulose/polyester blend media. Ford states it has 80% efficiency at 20 microns and larger, along with a silicone anti-drainback valve and a pressure-relief valve positioned to maintain oil supply if the filter becomes restricted, or the oil is extremely cold. The steel housing is also formed specifically for the application.
There’s nothing exotic about it, and that’s really the point. It’s the OE filter, with the filtration, flow characteristics, bypass strategy, size, and fit Ford intended for the 7.3.

Donaldson Blue DBL7405
The DBL7405 takes a slightly different approach.
Instead of cellulose-blend media, Donaldson uses its fully synthetic Synteq media. Donaldson rates the DBL7405 at 99% efficiency at 15 microns under ISO 4548-12 testing, and states that its Blue lube media captures more than 90% of particles 10 microns and larger. Donaldson also claims roughly twice the contaminant-holding capacity of conventional cellulose media while maintaining lower restriction.
That combination is why we like this filter. It isn’t simply larger, it uses a substantially different filter media designed around fine-particle efficiency, dirt capacity, and oil flow.
The size difference matters
The DBL7405 is a big filter: 4.65 inches in diameter and 11.73 inches long, with a 1½-16 thread.
That extra size gives Donaldson room for considerably more filter media and contaminant capacity, but there is a tradeoff. On some 2WD and stock-height 4WD trucks, the filter can interfere with the front sway bar. We specifically note that on the product page.
The Motorcraft filter avoids that concern because it is the factory-size application.

Which one should you run?
It’s a personal preference thing. They’re both great filters.
Motorcraft FL-1995-A:
- Ford OE service filter
- Cellulose/polyester media
- 80% efficiency at 20 microns
- Factory dimensions and clearance
- Ford-designed relief and anti-drainback system
Donaldson Blue DBL7405:
- Fully synthetic Synteq media
- 99% efficiency at 15 microns
- Higher fine-particle capture
- Roughly twice the contaminant capacity of standard cellulose media
- Lower-restriction media
- Much larger filter, but, with potential clearance issues worth checking on first
Bottom line
The Motorcraft FL-1995-A is an excellent choice. It’s the OE filter Ford specifies for the 7.3 and it does exactly what it was designed to do.
The Donaldson Blue DBL7405 is the step-up option with finer filtration and greater contaminant capacity.
One thing we wouldn’t do is extend 7.3 oil-change intervals just because the Donaldson has more capacity. The Donaldson filter gives you more filtration headroom; it doesn’t make the oil itself last forever.
